Vero Beach’s original power plant, built in 1926, was located in a brick building alongside the railroad tracks in the downtown area. Today the old power plant is home to American Icon Brewery that has incorporated much of the old generator gear into its interior and exterior design. Concerning the “Big Flywheel” out front, the sign reads:
THE BIG FLYWHEEL
This is the original flywheel which was once a part of the 1937 750 KILOWATT BUSCH-SULZER AIR INJECTED DIESEL ENGINE located within the building as the centerpiece of American Icon Brewery. The big diesel engine spun this huge wheel as part of its mechanical system to generate electricity for Vero Beach.
This Flywheel weighs 64,000 pounds.
