A full Moon blazes through the oak tree beneath the old fire tower in Indian River County just west of Vero Beach. These towers played an important role in detecting fires, many started by lightning, before development shrank Florida’s forests and modern technology made the lookout redundant. This particular tower is an Aermotor LS-40 steel tower erected in 1952. An attempt to save the tower as a historical landmark fell through a few years back when the local historical society and the County could not agree on a way forward through the red tape of both organizations.
