This industrious Red-bellied Woodpecker and his mate were working to hollow out a cavity in a dead palm tree in a parking lot in downtown Vero Beach – the old downtown, not the beachside where any sick looking or dead palm tree would be immediately removed to maintain the proper aesthetics for the “islanders”. With a little luck, this tree will make a nice home for a new Woodpecker family.
