Nightfall over Tranquility Base

Night falls over Mare Tranquillittatis and the Apollo 11 landing site, Tranquility Base, where humans first landed on the Moon on 20 July 1969.  This image taken in the early morning hours of 18 July 2022 on Earth shows the now dark landing site and the regions to the west in late afternoon light on the Moon.

Some of the more prominent features are labeled in this image, including the approximate Apollo 11 landing site shrouded in darkness.

The box shows the approximate area of the detail image.

Happy International Moon Day this 20 July 2022, the 53rd anniversary of the Apollo 11 Moon landing!
