Rubber monster suits were a staple of science fiction films in the 1950s. The classic early 1960s TV series The Outer Limits elevated them to an art form showing a great script can carry a rubber monster for good storytelling. Gene Roddenberry used rubber monster suits sparingly in his iconic Star Trek: The Original Series. But when he did trot one out, as he did for the Gorn in the 1967 episode Arena, he ended up making one of the best episodes of Star Trek ever over its long lifetime even to today.
