A beautifully clear if cold and windy night to watch the launch of an Atlas V rocket carrying NASA’s Tracking and Data Relay Satellite (TDRS-L) into orbit on 23 January 2014 at 9:33 p.m. from Space Launch Complex 41 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. I was happy to be invited to use the third-floor deck of Bob Bruce and Janice Broda’s seaside home to photograph the launch, which proved to be a unique vantage point that included a live […]

These images were a real challenge to take light wise during a quick trip down Wildlife Drive at Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge at sunset on Tuesday with Susan Boyd. With rapidly fading light and a fairly cold, brisk wind there was little opportunity to mull over the array of photogenic birds on hand. Instead, one took what one could get in the rapidly fading light as quickly as possible before the light was lost. I lament to this moment […]

After a bit of a digital hiatus, the Florida Cattle Ranch website has returned online in all its glory. The website is a photographic expression of my almost two years spent at Treasure Hammock Ranch taking pictures of wildlife and the cattle work during the time I was putting together the ranch presentation. In putting the website back online, I am hoping to start going out to Treasure Hammock Ranch again and take up photographing the wildlife and anything else […]
Here is a sampling of macro photography images from this past Sunday morning’s walk at the Oslo Riverfront Conservation Area. Thank you to Janice Broda for finding and identifying most of these subjects. The yellow corn-on-the-cob appearing eggs of the Zebra Longwing Butterfly nestled in the flower of a passion vine. Janice noted that this is a very succulent spot for the caterpillars since they will hatch right into an easy and nutritious meal. Great Southern White Butterfly The minute […]
As to be expected, a very nice turnout of very nice people at Sams House at Pine Island Conservation Area on Saturday afternoon to see the Florida Cattle Ranching program appropriately held in Brevard County’s oldest building dating back to 1875. And the program was up on the marquee out front, which is always nice to see! I wish I could have stayed around longer after the program to explore the grounds and trails. Next time. . . .
With a bracing wind chill – okay, this is Florida, not Antarctica – it was a cold set-up and wait to photograph the launch of the Thaicom 6 satellite aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket, which, thankfully, lifted off on time at 5:06 p.m. on 6 January 2014 from SLC-40 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. View a gallery of images of the launch at http://www.lunarcabin.com/Rocket_Launches/thaicom6.html.

The monthly bird count at the Indian River Club started at sunrise and carried through a brief ethereal white murk till the Sun finally got high enough to burn off the fog. At that point the magic vanished and we returned to the reality of driving golf carts around a golf course counting various bird species. Below is a sampling of images, some enhanced to catch the feel of the day. Thank you to Joe Carroll, Roz James, and Susan […]
