After much effort and dashing about, this Tricolored Heron splashes away gripping a little fish for a tiny meal at Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge. From the OspreyWatch project.
A Tricolored Heron, formerly known by the more Cajun name of Louisiana Heron, could not be more agreeable to posing during a visit to Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge. Viva Egretta tricolor!
A two day old report about a Sacred Ibis being spotted at the West Regional Wastewater Treatment Facility in Indian River County piqued my interest so I set out after work to see if I could find the bird. Here is a small sampling of other wildlife seen on the long hike around the Facility while trying to locate the Sacred Ibis. Skittish American Coots make a splashy exit whenever anyone draws too near. They never go very far, though, […]

More images of some of the Boynton Beach, Florida, Green Cay Nature Center wildlife from a late July visit. Florida Cooter basking on a palm tree trunk jutting out over the water. American Alligator on the prowl. I usually only see Green Herons from a distance given their skittish nature, so I was amazed and thrilled when this one landed momentarily near where I was standing. Tricolored Heron striking at prey in the water. Black-crowned Night-heron in flight. The Sun […]

There is no heating in the golf cart so it was a cold sunrise out on the golf course at the Indian River Club for the November bird count with Joe Carroll and Susan Boyd. First off, a series of images show the futile attempts of a Northern Mockingbird to drive an American Kestrel out of its territory. Sadly, the light was terrible for what would have been a great series of images with the proper lighting. Seeing the two […]

The monthly bird count at the Indian River Club started at sunrise and carried through a brief ethereal white murk till the Sun finally got high enough to burn off the fog. At that point the magic vanished and we returned to the reality of driving golf carts around a golf course counting various bird species. Below is a sampling of images, some enhanced to catch the feel of the day. Thank you to Joe Carroll, Roz James, and Susan […]
