The Blue Cypress Conservation Area is part of the 52,671-acre Upper St. Johns River Basin Project. Drained for agriculture in the early 1900s, the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers is trying to reestablish a semblance of extensive wetland habitats that defined the area prior to its disruption. The Conservation Area is home to many species of wildlife, including two islands newly adopted near the Stick Marsh boat launch as rookeries for Roseate Spoonbills and other wading birds. Stick Marsh Action […]

Great Blue Herons along the shore of Lake Apopka in Florida. A Great Blue Heron stands atop a downed utility pole. This was taken shortly after Hurricane Matthew but the storm may not have been the cause of the toppled pole, which was a bit of a mystery. That’s a Snowy Egret looking inconspicuous in size and attitude higher up on the pole at right. Ardea herodias in stately display.

These images were a real challenge to take light wise during a quick trip down Wildlife Drive at Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge at sunset on Tuesday with Susan Boyd. With rapidly fading light and a fairly cold, brisk wind there was little opportunity to mull over the array of photogenic birds on hand. Instead, one took what one could get in the rapidly fading light as quickly as possible before the light was lost. I lament to this moment […]
