Nictitating membrane

Note the bird’s eye, with its odd appearance due to its “third eyelid” being closed, most likely for protection against the bright Sun. According to Wikipedia, “The nictitating membrane is a transparent or translucent third eyelid present in some animals that can be drawn across the eye for protection and to moisten it while maintaining vision.”
