1920 Flashback

The Maher Building is one of the few remaining commercial buildings in Vero Beach from the 1920s Florida Land Boom era. Its combined residential/commercial use is typical of the period. Originally, the downstairs was a dry goods store while the upstairs was the residence of the owners, the Maher family, along with several one room apartments. While the building’s usage has changed over the years, and it has undergone some alterations, it still, essentially, retains its original character.

It is also of note that this is the second building on this property to house the Maher store, the first wood frame building burnt down when a fire swept through downtown Vero Beach in November 1919.
