Index Fossil

From the interpretive card at the Orlando Science Center:

Trilobite
Phaecops rana
Hamburg, NY
Mid-Devonian: 380 million years ago

Notice the large bug-like eyes on its frog-like head. Rana is the scientific name for frogs but this arthropod, who roamed ancient seafloor all over the world, is more closely related to insects, spiders, and crustaceans.

It’s also an index fossil – something that lived in a particular geologic age that can be used to date the rock layer it was found in.
