The skull of an extinct Saber-toothed Cat, Barbourfelis lovei, unearthed in Alachua County, Florida as seen at the Orlando Science Center. An adult probably weighed around 150 pounds.
This type of Saber-toothed Cat roamed the Earth during the Miocene Epoch about 10 million years ago. Its range extended over most of North America.
An even larger version, Barbourofelis fricki, roamed the Western United States and weighed 2 to 4 times more than the species found in Florida.
