During the Late Cretaceous period from 94-66 million years ago a great Western Interior Seaway covered the land between the Appalachian to the Rocky Mountains splitting North America into at least two landmasses.
This shallow sea was filled with prehistoric life like the marine reptile Tylosaurus proriger, an apex predator whose fossilized stomach contents from numerous fossil remains found throughout the Midwest revealed it preyed upon a wide variety of contemporary fauna—including members of its own species!
An example of Tylosaurus proriger on display at the Orlando Science Center.
