The Florida heat can make anyone lethargic and so it is at the big Paper Wasp nest at Audubon House at the Oslo Riverfront Conservation Area (ORCA). The wasps seem to spend the hottest part of the day, even though they are in the shade, which itself is pretty warm cut off mostly from the breeze given the nest’s location in a sort of inverted box attached to the wall, moving as little as possible. An almost 180-degree panorama taken from atop the observation tower overlooking the wetlands at the Indrio Savannahs. Although it is only mid-morning, the blazing temperature kept most of the wildlife out of sight and undercover and made the hike out and back one sweaty affair.
A bit ominous, this large congregation of flies seen out at Egret Marsh Stormwater Park. Probably not too surprising since right next to them was a large mound of algae decomposing rather feditly under the blazing Florida sun.
This Alligator at Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge looks to be enjoying the summer heat and mud but, if something worthwhile ambled by that looked good to eat, the Alligator most likely would be lightning quick to grab it.
