The Limpkin (Aramus guarauna), despite its name, does not really walk with a limp thought its unusual gait seems to be suggestive enough that it became its common name. And its scientific name is not much help. Aramus seems to have an unknown origin and guarauna is a local Brazilian name for the bird though it is fairly common in Florida wetlands. What people who have experienced it remember most about the bird is its scream-like call in the middle of the night that is loud enough to keep the neighbors awake.
