Red-bellied Woodpecker at the Refuge

A Red-bellied Woodpecker (Melanerpes carolinus) at Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge. This is a female based on the fact the red feathers on her head don’t come all the way down her forehead to her beak like they do with the male. And note the red feathered belly, which is very prominent on this individual. Usually the red feathers on the belly are more discrete and hard to see.
